Halo-Halo: The Sweetest Way to Beat the Summer Heat

Filipinos have a hidden weapon for staying cool throughout the sweltering summer: halo-halo. This well-known dessert, which is a refreshing and vibrant combination of sweet ingredients and literally translates to "mix-mix" in Tagalog, has grown to be a cherished staple of Philippine cuisine.

In the Philippines, halo-halo has a long and illustrious history. The Japanese dessert known as kakigori, which is made with shaved ice and sweet syrups, is thought to have served as the dessert's inspiration. Filipinos started modifying the dessert over time by introducing native components including beans, fruits, and milk.

Halo-halo is now loved across the nation by individuals of all ages and is available in numerous forms. While shaved ice, evaporated milk, and sweet syrup are the same as the basic ingredients, the toppings and flavors can differ significantly depending on the region and the personal preference.

The most popular halo-halo toppings include fruits, tapioca pearls, jellies, and sweetened beans. For additional richness and flavor, several varieties additionally contain a scoop of ice cream or leche flan (a type of custard).

Halo-halo may be tailored to any taste, which is one of its best features. Others like to go all out with a wide range of ingredients, while some people prefer a simpler version with only a few toppings. Halo-halo is perhaps the best way to beat the summer heat, regardless of how you choose to enjoy it. I personally like a tall glass with caramelized banana, macapuno and leche flan.

There are certain must-try brands to bear in mind if you want to experience halo-halo for the first time. One well-known business is Razon's, which is renowned for its simple yet delectable dessert that uses only a few key components. I maybe biased here, but Razon's really my favorite! I also love Chef Claude Tayag's Halo-halo with pastillas de leche that he served during our visit to Downtown 1956 Cafe by Bale Dutung in Pampanga. It's heaven! If you're on the go, another favorite is the fast food company Chowking, which provides a blend of traditional and modern flavors.

In the Philippines, there are several independent stores and eateries that offer their own special spins on the dessert for those who want to taste a more artisanal version. In Manila, Milky Way Cafe is one such establishment that has been offering its famous halo-halo for more than 50 years.
