Why You Should Get a Family Health Insurance

It was in 2007. I was found to have a cyst in the pelvic area. During the check up, the doctor recommended that I undergo a surgery to have it removed. It was fast growing in mass and should be a cause of alarm. I left his clinic quietly thinking. What happened? And just like in the movies, tears came rolling down my cheeks.

I was hesitant to tell my parents about my case. I thought a miracle will happen and I will wake up the next day without the cyst. But it did not happen. It was still there. I have decided to tell one my good buds about it and suggested seeking a second opinion. The second doctor still recommended surgery-immediately. That's when I have decided to tell my parents about it.

I was not worried about getting under the knife. I was more troubled about the finances. Back then, I was a struggling preschool teacher with not a lot of savings. 3 of us in the family are working- my father, me and my sister. I have 4 siblings who are still in school- 2 in tertiary; 2 in secondary. Our earnings then are always just enough for every day expenses.

We have no emergency funds because our earnings are mostly for utilities, food, house rental and education. I hate to admit it, but I don't even have SSS and PhilHealth contributions then. So what happens now?

I was lucky to have been endorsed by my surgeon to avail of the facilities at super discounted rate. I was at the hospital for four days. Praise heavens the operation was successful. The doctors told me we were just on time- because the cyst could have been cancer if I have been operated on a later date. The cyst was the size of a small fist. Some friends also shared their blessings and helped me fund my post operation expenses.

Looking back, I was lucky to have endured that situation. I learned to value my life and health more. And yes, being prepared in circumstance like this is a must.

IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU OR YOUR FAMILY MEMBER.

The leading cause of death in the Philippines is heart disease, with rates steadily rising from 70 per 100 000 population in 1997, to 90 per 100 000 population in 2005. Communicable diseases continue to be major causes of morbidity and mortality in the Philippines. Infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and pneumonia are leading causes of death. Malaria and leprosy remain a problem in a number of regions of the country. Also shown in the tables is the prevalence of non-communicable diseases, such as diseases of the heart, diabetes mellitus and cancers. The National Nutrition and Health Survey in 2003-2004 revealed the prevalence rates of risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, such as coronary artery disease, stroke and peripheral arterial disease . Of the 4753 adults who participated in the nationwide study, 60.5% were physically inactive, and 54.8% of women were obese. Among males, 56.3% have a history of smoking. Alcohol intake among adults had a prevalence of 46%. (SOURCE: The Philippines Health System Review)

PREPARE.

With the sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy food and pollution, one is always prone to get sick. And for the average Filipino family, getting sick is the least we want to happen because this would mean shelving extra from our wallet. While the government has agencies like SSS and PhilHealth who can aide us on times of sickness or hospitalization, it can only do so much.

We all know that someone who is the breadwinner of the family and becomes sick, maybe bed ridden for weeks or months- maybe year and then the whole family suffers. Or you are the breadwinner of the family and someone from your squad gets sick. Again, the whole family suffers.

And while I have learned the importance of having savings or a health fund for emergencies like these, I have also considered having health insurance.

WHY GET A HEALTH INSURANCE?

Having a health insurance gives you financial assistance should unforeseen circumstances happen. Medical services are, most of the time, expensive and you don't want to bore a hole in your pocket when you're sick. A health insurance helps you to afford the expensive medical services (depending on your coverage, of course).

If I had a health insurance at the time that I will be undergoing a surgery, I know I'll have peace of mind that I can get the medical treatment as I need it.

A health insurance can help add protection to your family. It's like having an additional support that gives one a lesser burden to carry on medical and hospital bills.

HEALTH IS WEALTH

Health is the top concern of many Filipinos based on a 2015 study. Less than half million are hospitalized each year.

It is best to eat healthy and keep an active lifestyle to be in good shape. And with what I have experienced, having a health insurance is a must-not an option. If you don't have one, act and get one. NOW.

YGC HEALTH PROTECTION

If you're keen in getting you and your family a health insurance, I suggest checking out YGC Health Protection. They have several Health Protection Plans depending on your specific needs or your family members. Cash benefits are provided not only for hospital confinement but also for ICU coverage, life and disability benefits. The CARD FOR LIFE plan even provides for add-on cash benefits for payment of your annual credit card dues.

Choose from these Health Protection Plans:
  • Hospital Cash Plan
  • Family Shield
  • Family Protect Plus
  • Card For Life
  • Family Protect Elite
  • Family Protect Max
With these types of health insurance, claims will be paid directly to the Insured once he submits the required docs as proof of confinement. A client can file a claim for daily hospital income benefit provided he was confined for  at least 24 hours in a hospital, whether private or public. Claim amount will depend on the plan option and number of days confined. For example, if a client enrolled under Plan 3000 and was confined for 10 days, claim amount is P30,000 (3,000 x 10).

With these Health Protection Plans, you are assured that your family will be taken cared of if something worse happen. We all know how tight the bond of a Filipino family is. Our love is manifested even beyond life. If you haven't gotten yourself an insurance or a health protection plan, think again.
