Rhythm of Our Roots: Kicking Off National Heritage Month at Rizal Park

Kultura PH: Ugat at Indayog ng ating Lahi

There is a specific kind of magic that happens when the sun begins to set over Luneta. The air cools, the lights of the Open-Air Auditorium flicker to life, and the sound of the kulintang or the rhythmic snapping of bamboo poles begins to echo through the trees.

This May, that magic is getting a major upgrade. To officially open National Heritage Month, the iconic Concert at the Park is bringing us a showcase that promises to be as soulful as it is spectacular: “Kultura PH: Ugat at Indayog ng Ating Lahi.”

A Showcase of Filipino Motion

The spotlight this time shines on the EAC Yaman Lahi Dance Artists. As the official resident dance company of Emilio Aguinaldo College, these performers aren't just dancers—they are cultural keepers. Supported by the EAC Culture and the Arts Office, they’ve mastered everything from the grounded, earthy movements of our indigenous tribes to the sharp, high-energy beats of modern street dance.
But they aren’t coming alone. The LPU Dance Troupe will also be taking the stage, ensuring the evening is a full-throttle celebration of our diverse identity.

What to Expect: A Journey Across the Islands

The program is designed to be a visual map of the Philippines. You’ll witness:
  • The Cordillera Suite: Earthy, rhythmic dances from the highlands.
  • Bangsamoro Traditions: The intricate, flowing movements of the South.
  • Rural Traditions: The playful, communal dances of our provinces (think tinikling and pandanggo sa ilaw).
  • Spanish-Influenced Classics: The elegant, Maria Clara-style dances that tell the story of our colonial past.
A Legacy Continued

If you grew up in Manila, Concert at the Park likely holds a spot in your childhood memories. Started way back in April 1978, it remains the longest-running cultural program in the country. It has survived decades of change, staying true to its mission: bringing world-class Philippine music and dance to the people, free of charge.

In a world of digital streaming, there’s something deeply grounding about sitting on those stone benches, feeling the breeze, and watching our heritage come to life in the flesh.
