PALAWAN. The word alone evokes image of emerald seas, hidden lagoons, and an unspoiled nature that seems to have stood the test of time. And the Funny Lion Hotel, tucked away in Puerto Princesa, the province's capital, is a haven that embodies this essence of unmatched comfort and natural elegance. I'm still feeling the afterglow of an amazing three-day, two-night stay at this magnificent property, which was, to put it simply, exceptional. The Funny Lion easily meets all of your needs, whether you're a family looking for comfort, a honeymooner seeking serenity or a solo traveler yearning a fine retreat. Here are 7 things I absolutely love about this hotel that made my Puerto Princesa stay an experience worth remembering.

It was immediately apparent to me when I entered my room that "premium" here is more than just a statement; it's a philosophy. The rooms at the Funny Lion are a masterwork of understated luxury, fusing modern designs with tranquil, natural features that complement Palawan's natural beauty. Imagine luxurious bedding that beckons you to a restful slumber, immaculately maintained areas that feel roomy yet intimately comfortable, and conveniences that have been carefully chosen for today's traveler. An atmosphere of calm sophistication is created by every little detail, from the tasteful wooden accents to the soothing lighting. It's a place to relax, think, and enjoy the quiet times in between activities in addition to sleeping. Returning to this sanctuary after a day of exploring Puerto Princesa seemed like a real treat. In fact, after being on a week of going around Puerto Princesa, hopping from one accommodation to the next, this is the first time I slept for 9 hours straight! You bet I slept like a baby-- it was the best bed I've had!

Everything was carefully chosen to create a calming atmosphere, from the soft bed sheets to the modern furnishings and the subtle scent of tropical freshness. Additionally, our room has a balcony that is ideal for morning coffee or nighttime contemplation while taking in the sounds of the birds and cicadas humming.

The toilet and bath were spotless and modern.  Every rinse felt like a spa treatment thanks to the rainfall showers. And yes, toiletries are complete!

2. Accommodation That Anticipates Your Desires

What truly sets The Funny Lion apart is its intuitive, heartfelt hospitality. This isn't just service; it's genuine care that anticipates your needs before you even voice them. Upon arrival, a refreshing complimentary fruit juice bottles greeted me, a sweet prelude to the thoughtful gestures. I was surprised to have been delivered a fresh buko (young coconut) with the Funny Lion logo engraved on it (talk about personalized) – a quintessential tropical treat – and the delightful surprise of complimentary afternoon snacks from 3-4 PM at Hunt, their in-house resto. As dusk settled, a knock on the door would bring a small jar of freshly baked cookies, a perfect companion to unwind with before dinner.

Along with the welcome note on my bed are yellow bandanas. Hanging on the wall is a beautiful tote bag. And when we checked-out, we were given hand-made bracelets. Perfect hotel souvenirs, indeed!

At breakfast, I would have the pleasure of a small tete-a-tete with the hotel managers. I notice that they really take time to greet every guests eating at Hunt. These small, consistent acts of kindness transform a stay into a truly memorable experience, making you feel cherished and genuinely at home.

If you prefer something less salty, The Funny Lion’s outdoor pool area is an exquisite oasis, designed for both invigorating laps and languid afternoons under the sun. Surrounded by lush tropical greenery, it offers a tranquil retreat from the day’s excursions. Imagine floating effortlessly, the Palawan sun warming your skin, or unwinding with a good book by the poolside, perhaps with a refreshing drink in hand. It’s an idyllic setting that blends natural beauty with sophisticated comfort, providing ample space to relax and rejuvenate without ever feeling crowded.

As for me, I liked wading by the pool during the night. As dusk falls, the pool lights shimmer beautifully, making it a serene spot to enjoy the evening breeze.

It’s easy to lose track of time here — and honestly, that’s part of the magic.

Our mornings begin with a delightful buffet breakfast at Hunt, the hotel's in-house restaurant. Overlooking the pool, Hunt combines Filipino warmth with elegance.

Every palate is satisfied by the buffet dish, which offers a pleasant journey of regional and international delicacies. There are plenty of options to fuel your Palawan explorations, ranging from freshly baked pastries and flavorful tropical fruits to savory Filipino classics and perfectly prepared international breakfast staples. I was even surprised to see a tsokolate de batirol- an old tradition of simmering the tablea (chocolate tablets) with water or milk and whipping it with the 'batirol'. It was a nice addition to also immerse oneself on some Pinoy traditions.

And of course, there’s freshly brewed coffee — bold, aromatic, and the perfect companion to your morning conversations.

With its chic yet cozy furnishings, Hunt's ambience enhances the whole experience and makes every morning a calm and fulfilling beginning. It demonstrates The Funny Lion's dedication to offering a comprehensive, first-rate experience, making sure that even your morning meal is outstanding.

In addition to the all these pleasures, The Funny Lion has an amazing selection of free activities that genuinely improve the visitor experience. Imagine exploring the tranquil mangroves or a secluded cove while kayaking calmly across the water. This is the ideal way to see Palawan's natural splendor. 

Archery lessons offer a stimulating and enjoyable challenge for people with a good eye and steady hand. When I learned that they offer free archery, I knew I had to challenge my inner Katniss Everdeen! I have tried it several times before, one that includes traditional archery in Zambales, and it's an activity that I liked doing.

Bikes are also available for free of use. If you're looking to do some cardio or simply wanting to roam nearby areas, you can also try this one.

Additionally, guided bird watching give nature lovers the opportunity to see some of Palawan's distinctive bird residents. These well-considered extras are a wonderful way to give visitors a taste of the local way of life without requiring them to leave the hotel's warm embrace, making your stay much more valuable and memorable.

For someone who is used to checking in at 'boxed' hotel buildings, here, I am encouraged to calm down, take a deep breath, and genuinely appreciate the beauty of the surroundings. The hotel's distinct charm and upscale atmosphere are greatly enhanced by this careful blending of architecture and space.

Another reason to adore the Funny Lion is its location. The Puerto Princesa City Baywalk, where locals flock to savor seafood meals and sunset vistas, is only a short drive away. Nearby historical sites include Plaza Cuartel and the Immaculate Conception Cathedral.

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is well worth the two-hour drive if you're looking for even more adventure. Honda Bay, which has beautiful sand beaches and crystal-clear waters, is only thirty minutes away for those who enjoy island hopping.

When you return to the city, you may simply visit nearby cafés, eat dinner at KaLui Restaurant, or try some street food at the Baywalk.
